Israeli Ship Prompts High Alert In Lebanon, Spotted 4 km Off Coast

Israel has deployed a naval vessel dangerously close to the Lebanese coast, prompting Beirut to put the Armed Forces on high alert.

The ship was spotted just four kilometers off the country’s shores, a Press TV correspondent reported, citing Lebanese media sources.

The development followed yet another Israeli violation of Lebanon’s airspace, which was reported by the Lebanese Army.

The airspace violation occurred on Tuesday when an Israeli reconnaissance aircraft flew over parts of southern and eastern Lebanon.

The overflights violate United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. The resolution, which brokered a ceasefire in the war Israel launched against Lebanon in 2006, calls on Tel Aviv to respect Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Only last week, Israel reportedly fired ammunition into southern Lebanon as part of a maneuver.

Beirut has complained to the UN about the Israeli overflights on a number of occasions.

The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah, which defended the country in the 33-Day War of 2006, has vowed to respond with determination to any Israeli aggression.

Hezbollah has announced that it has the capability to hit targets deep inside Israel and to strike Israeli Navy vessels even before they reach Lebanese territorial waters.
